Q&A with George from The Real McCoy

George from The Real McCoy

Working with the people of Scarborough every day for the last 40 years has left me with some amazing memories and endless stories to tell.

SCARBOROUGH SPOTS: George, The Real McCoy has been in business for over 50 years and still going strong! People all over Scarborough and beyond truly love The Real McCoy. What do you believe have been the keys to your long lasting success?

GEORGE: Dedication, hard work, consistency, quality ingredients and connecting with the community are the keys to successful, long-running restaurant. More recently, adapting to current times and trends have really helped. Introducing Uber Eats, touch-less payment options and collaborating with local social media platforms have especially been beneficial during the past few months!

SCARBOROUGH SPOTS: Scarborough is known for great food and great restaurants. Every week a new shop is opening up with hopes of reaching the level of success your The Real McCoy has reached. If you had to give any advice to someone looking to open up a shop of their own, what would you say?

GEORGE: Opening up and running a busy restaurant is not easy. It requires a lot of time and dedication. Never use cheap products. Always use fresh, quality ingredients and customers will come. Keep your prices competitive and don’t be too greedy! Most importantly, give back to the community. Sponsor a sports team or cater a charity event.

SCARBOROUGH SPOTS: You've seen a lot over these past few decades and you've shared some incredible stories with me. What are some of your favourite stories from The Real McCoy?

GEORGE: There’s too many to choose from. One of the best memories has to be the Bare Naked Ladies filming a music video in front of The Real McCoy. They’re from Scarborough and used to come by all the time. They would perform their songs right in the parking lot. Another great memory I have is about a customer who served in Afghanistan for months. When he finally came home, his first stop was The Real McCoy! He wanted a slice of pizza before even seeing his family and friends. I could go on and on. Working with the people of Scarborough every day for the last 40 years has left me with some amazing memories and endless stories to tell.

SCARBOROUGH SPOTS: We worked together on 3 shirts I think we both love, but if you had to pick your favourite shirt of the bunch which shirt is your favourite and why?

GEORGE: It has to be the shirt with the store front on it. I see it every day coming in to work, but there’s something about seeing it on a T-shirt that is really cool. What a great shot! Nothing is better than seeing loyal customers wearing these shirts when they come in to pick up dinner.

SCARBOROUGH SPOTS: The question all of Scarborough wants to know is what's next for The Real McCoy?

GEORGE: We’ve got about two years left at this location. After that, well, stay tuned!
